AromaTouch Technique

15 March 2020

“A beautiful layering of essential oils to bring the body back into balance”.

The AromaTouch Technique is not a massage.

It is a beautiful and soothing relaxation technique that uses the healing powers of touch combined with the amazing benefits of Certified Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils.

During your treatment these Essential Oils are applied to the body to produce a relaxing, grounding and revitalising whole-body experience.

The AromaTouch Technique is a clinical approach to applying specific doTERRA Essential Oils along energy meridians and visceral contact points on the back, neck and feet to help stimulate and balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of the body.

This system is comprised of simple application methods that enable these powerful essential oils to reach the optimal areas within the body where they can help combat stress, enhance immune function, decrease inflammation, and balance the autonomic nervous system within the recipient.

The Technique focuses on four main areas:

Stress Management to Balance and Calm.

Immune Support to Cleanse and Strengthen.

Inflammation and Pain Reduction to Stimulate and Soothe.

Homeostasis to Invigorate and Centre.

Stress:

Stress refers to the many systemic changes that can take place within our body as it responds to different challenging situations. Stress can derive difficult, new and pressured situations that occur in life. However, stress also results from the body being challenged to cope with such things as abnormal physical exertion, a lack of proper nutrients in the diet, disease-causing microorganisms and toxic chemicals that can make their way into the body. Generally, the systems within a healthy body can usually deal with most challenges thrown at it short term, however constant or chronic stress on our systems will overly fatigue them, which will limit their ability to be able to respond to further future challenges.

Immune Support:

Our body is continuously working to cope with a vast array of toxins that are constantly inundating it. These toxins may come from a variety of sources such as chemical-laden foods, pollution in the air and water, and pathogenic microorganisms that invade the body. Our environment is becoming increasingly saturated with toxins and rising numbers of resistant pathogens which causes our cells, tissues, and systems in our bodies to work even harder to both process and eliminate these threats with the intention of maintaining health.

Inflammation:

Inflammation is a normal response of our immune system to allow the body to contain and fight infection or to repair damage tissues. This response dilates the blood vessels and increases vascular permeability to allow more blood to flow to an area with injured or infected tissue. While a certain amount of inflammation can be beneficial in fighting disease and healing injuries, chronic inflammation can further injure surrounding tissues or cause debilitating levels of pain.

Homeostasis – Autonomic Imbalance:

The autonomic nervous system is comprised of nerves that are connected to the muscles, organs, tissues and systems that don’t require conscious effort to control. The autonomic system is divided into two main parts that each have separate, balancing functions. These are 1) the sympathetic nervous system and 2) the parasympathetic nervous system.

The sympathetic nervous system functions to accelerate heart rate, increase blood pressure, slow digestion, and constrict blood vessels. It activates the “fight or flight” response so that it can deal with threatening or stressful situations.

The parasympathetic nervous system functions to slow heart rate, store energy, stimulate digestive activity, and relax specific muscles. It activates the “rest and digest” response.

Maintaining a proper balance within the autonomic nervous system is important for optimal body function and maintenance.

Massage for Seizures and Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a relatively common seizure disorder, rooted in the central nervous system. Typically, this is diagnosed by a physician after a person has suffered from at least two unprovoked seizures; which is epileptic seizures that are not caused by a known medical condition such as alcohol withdrawal or extremely low blood sugar. Seizures can be genetic, related to a brain injury, or due to an unknown cause.

A seizure is a sudden surge of electrical activity in the brain’s outer rim, this layer is known as the cerebral cortex. It will affect how a person feels or acts for a short period of time. They can range from mild to totally disabling and consist of may possible symptoms. While not everyone experiences these, the following is a list of the more common seizure symptoms which include:

· Blacking out

· Confusion

· Feeling spacey or dizzy

· Sensation of being out of the body

· Convulsions or twitching

· Feeling of fear

· Loss of motor control

· Difficulty talking

· Eyes rolling up into head

· Incontinence

· Drooling, foaming, teeth clenching, or tongue biting

· Memory loss.

Approximately 70% of those with epilepsy can control their condition with medication, however the remaining 30% are not as lucky. In addition to this the medications for anti-seizure control can have severe side effects.

The cause of epilepsy is unknown for about half of all those affected. Common causes of seizures in children and adults include:

· Congenital conditions (such as Down’s syndrome, Angelman’s syndrome, tuberous sclerosis and neurofibromatosis).

· Genetic factors

· Progressive brain disease

· Brain tumour

· Head trauma

In seniors, common causes for seizures can include:

· Stroke

· Alzheimer’s disease

· Trauma

Some people who have no clear cause of epilepsy could have a genetic cause.

For those that have epilepsy, some find that there is a pattern or trigger that can bring on a seizure. One common trigger that has been identified is stress.

In vulnerable individuals, stress will cause brain cells prone to hyper-excitability to fire abnormally. In addition to the logical conclusion of reducing stress through seeking avenues or relaxation, massage and aromatherapy have both demonstrated remarkable results for reducing seizure occurrence and severity.

Complementary therapies such as Massage and Aromatherapy using therapeutic graded essential oils can be used in conjunction with anti-epileptic drugs and are also very supportive for the numerous side-effects of the medication as well. Particularly where seizures are triggered by stress, Massage and Aromatherapy help to reduce and manage stress levels and for some people also help reduce seizures. They are also used to reduce tension and pain in muscles and help improve the quality of sleep patterns, which are common among people suffering seizures.

Complementary therapies such as herbal remedies, homeopathy, supplements and aromatherapy can help promote well-being and underlying health while reducing stress. However, many people will assume these are safe as they are derived from natural sources, but this is not always true. Just because something is natural does not mean it is safe. Any complementary therapy is a drug, whether it is ingested, inhaled or applied to your skin. What is important is that you understand the therapy and how it will impact on your body and for you to stay informed with your therapist and medical team. Never stop taking anti-epileptic medication suddenly or attempt to alter the dosage on your own. This can lead to serious or life-threatening seizures.

Be sure to also let your therapist know if you are following a ketogenic diet to improve epilepsy symptoms as weakness, dizziness, sleepiness and diarrhoea are all side effects that may mean your session may need to altered slightly to make you feel more comfortable and so you get the best results (any specific diet or lifestyle coping mechanisms should be discussed with your therapist so they can best accommodate your treatment for you). Each person and their epilepsy is different and should be considered individually. Knowledge is power, talk to your therapist before you begin and chat through any concerns you may have.
